Abstract

This paper addresses the concept of al-Nadeem (The companion) in Arabic and Islamic civilization. Dictionaries have profusely painted out the unanimously approval lexical meaning of the term as referring to a drinking companion. But scrupulous research has proved beyond doubt that the term has a much wider sense than that conveyed by dictionaries. Among other connotation, the term “Alnadeem” means consultant and brother. Having a “nadeem” (companion) has become a common custom not only among kings, caliphs, princes and leaders but also among layout men. The relationship between the two companions is primarily based on strong affection and mutual respect. They disclose to each other their inner feelings and thoughts which they hide from others .very often, they show brotherly and manly attitudes towards each other. One is ready to sacrifice his life for the other. Generally, “ al-munadama” companionship has over the years acquired special and plain characteristics accordingly, al nadeem should meet certain requirements which determine his obligation towards his companion.
